Charizard X is the blue-flamed Mega Evolution of Charizard, and it has become one of the most popular Pokemon of the Mega Evolution era. In the trading card game, it returned as the headline card of the Phantasmal Flames expansion, released on 14 November 2025.
This guide explains who Charizard X is, every major version of the card, where to find them and how to build a collection without overspending.

What Is Charizard X?
Charizard has two Mega Evolutions, known as X and Y. The X form has a black body and blue flames, and it becomes a Fire and Dragon type when it Mega Evolves. Fans love its dark, fierce look, which sets it apart from the classic orange Charizard.
The blue-flamed Mega first appeared in the trading card game during the XY era. In the current Mega Evolution era, it returned as a powerful Mega Evolution Pokemon ex, and collectors immediately made it the most wanted card of its set.
The Phantasmal Flames Versions
Phantasmal Flames is the second main set of the Mega Evolution era, and the blue-flamed Mega is its star. Searing blue flames rip across a dark battlefield as it soars above its opponents. The set includes four versions:
- Double Rare (013/094): the regular version found in the main set
- Ultra Rare (109/094): a full-art version with a textured finish
- Special Illustration Rare (125/094): a full-scene artwork and one of the set’s top chases
- Mega Hyper Rare (130/094): the gold top-rarity version and the hardest pull in the set
Our Phantasmal Flames booster box guide covers the rest of the set, including the Rotom ex Special Illustration Rare.

The Ultra-Premium Collection Promo
The Ultra-Premium Collection released alongside Phantasmal Flames includes an alternate-art promo of the Mega, sourced from a Japanese release. The box also contains an Oricorio ex promo, 65 sleeves, a playmat, a deck box, a metal coin, six dice and 18 booster packs. Our Charizard UPC guide explains the box in detail.
How Charizard X Plays in the TCG
In the game, the card is a Fire-type Mega Evolution Pokemon ex. Its Inferno X attack discards Fire Energy to deal more damage, so decks built around it need a reliable way to get Fire Energy into play. Oricorio ex, which appears in the same era, is designed to help with that.
Like all Mega Evolution Pokemon ex, it gives up three Prize cards when it is Knocked Out. Strong decks protect it with healing and switching cards and keep a backup attacker ready on the bench.
A simple starter deck plan
- Include the full Charmander, Charmeleon and Mega line.
- Add plenty of Fire Energy, around 12 to 15 cards.
- Include draw and search Trainer cards to find your pieces.
- Add cards that help attach Energy quickly.
- Practise with friends before entering events.

X vs Y: Which Mega Charizard Is Better?
The Y form keeps Charizard’s classic orange colouring and becomes a Fire and Flying type. The X form turns black with blue flames and becomes Fire and Dragon. Collectors often chase both, but Charizard X has a slight edge in popularity thanks to its striking look. Both appeared in the XY era, and both are part of the wider Mega story.
The XY era originals
In 2014, the XY era Flashfire set printed Mega Charizard cards for both forms. The blue-flamed version was a Dragon-type card in that era. Vintage collectors enjoy pairing these originals with their modern counterparts to show how the design has changed.
Are Charizard X Cards Valuable?
Charizard is the most popular Pokemon in the hobby, so its rare cards attract strong demand. The gold Mega Hyper Rare and the Special Illustration Rare are the most valuable versions from Phantasmal Flames. The regular Double Rare is affordable and a great starting point for new collectors.
Tips for buying
- Compare recent sold prices for the exact version and number
- Check corners and surfaces carefully in photos
- Verify graded cards on the grading company’s website
- Buy singles if you want a specific version rather than chasing packs
Our Pokemon singles range includes other Phantasmal Flames favourites such as the Rotom ex Special Illustration Rare.
Protecting Your Charizard X Cards
Gold and full-art cards scratch easily. Sleeve them straight from the pack, store them in toploaders or magnetic holders and keep them out of direct sunlight. Our premium sleeves and team bags are perfect for this.
Display ideas
A magnetic holder on a shelf turns the gold Mega Hyper Rare into a small trophy. For the full set of versions, a 9-pocket page with black backing shows off every flame and highlight. Rotate displayed cards occasionally so none spends years in bright light.

Collecting Charizard X on a Budget
Not every collector can chase the gold card straight away. Start with the Double Rare, add the Ultra Rare, then save for the Special Illustration Rare. Trading duplicate hits from other sets is a great way to reach the higher tiers without spending more. Booster packs from Phantasmal Flames also give you a fun chance at every version.
Gift ideas
For a Charizard fan, a single card in a magnetic holder is a memorable gift. Booster packs or a premium collection box also make great presents, especially when paired with sleeves and a binder.
