The Phantasmal Flames booster box is the full display of the second expansion in the Mega Evolution series. Released on 14 November 2025, the set is headlined by Mega Charizard X ex, which instantly made it one of the most talked-about sets of the era.
This guide explains what is inside a Phantasmal Flames booster box, which cards collectors chase, how the set fits into the Mega Evolution era and how to get the most from your opening.
What Is Inside a Phantasmal Flames Booster Box?
A standard English Phantasmal Flames booster box contains:
- 36 Phantasmal Flames booster packs
- 10 cards in every pack
- Either 1 Basic Energy or 1 Pokemon TCG Live code card per pack
- Cards that vary from pack to pack
That adds up to 360 cards from the set in one display, which is enough to build most of the main set and give you plenty of chances at the rare cards.
The Phantasmal Flames Set at a Glance
Phantasmal Flames has a fire-and-dark theme. Searing blue flames rip across a dark battlefield as Mega Charizard X ex soars above its opponents. The set has 130 cards in total, with a main set of 94 cards plus secret rares.
New Mega Evolution Pokemon ex
Alongside Mega Charizard X ex, the set introduces Mega Evolution Pokemon ex such as Mega Heracross ex, Mega Lopunny ex, Mega Sharpedo ex and Mega Diancie ex. Like all Mega Evolution Pokemon ex, they are powerful, but your opponent takes three Prize cards when one is Knocked Out.
Best Chase Cards in the Phantasmal Flames Booster Box
These are the cards collectors hope to find:
- Mega Charizard X ex Mega Hyper Rare (130/094): the gold top-rarity version of the set’s headliner
- Mega Charizard X ex Special Illustration Rare (125/094): a full-scene artwork that Charizard fans love
- Rotom ex Special Illustration Rare (126/094): a bright, playful card and a favourite with collectors
- Mega Sharpedo ex and Mega Lopunny ex Special Illustration Rares: two more striking full-art cards

We stock the Rotom ex 126/094 Special Illustration Rare as a Near Mint single, if you would rather skip the pull rates.
Mega Charizard X ex explained
Mega Charizard X ex is a Fire-type Mega Evolution Pokemon ex. Its Inferno X attack discards Fire Energy to deal more damage, so decks built around it focus on getting lots of Fire Energy into play. Collectors love it for the blue-flamed artwork that sets it apart from the classic orange Charizard.
Other Cards Worth Looking For
The headline cards get the attention, but a Phantasmal Flames booster box has plenty more to enjoy.
Illustration Rares
The set’s Illustration Rares show Pokemon in their own scenes, and many collectors try to complete the full run. Look out for Zacian, Flygon, Piplup, Yamper, Paldean Wooper, Toxtricity, Togedemaru, Wigglytuff, Meowth and Ambipom.
Ultra Rares
Full-art Ultra Rare versions of Mega Heracross ex, Mega Charizard X ex, Oricorio ex and Rotom ex are a step up from the regular Double Rare cards and look great in a binder.
The Charmander line
Charmander and Charmeleon appear in the main set too, so you can build the full evolution line up to Mega Charizard X ex. It is a fun mini goal for younger collectors.
Playing With Mega Charizard X ex
If you plan to build a deck around Mega Charizard X ex, you will want plenty of Fire Energy and cards that help you attach it quickly. Oricorio ex, which appears in the set, is designed to help with exactly that. Because Mega Evolution Pokemon ex give up three Prize cards, protect your attacker and use your bench wisely.
Tips for Opening a Phantasmal Flames Booster Box
- Open over a clean, soft surface and handle cards by the edges.
- Sleeve every Mega ex and Special Illustration Rare straight away.
- Sort by number as you go, so you can see what you are missing.
- Keep code cards together if you play Pokemon TCG Live.
- Store your best pulls in toploaders or magnetic holders.
Should You Keep a Phantasmal Flames Booster Box Sealed?
Some collectors keep a sealed display of sets they love, especially sets with a famous headliner like Charizard. If you do, store it upright, out of sunlight and away from damp. Remember that sealed product can go down in value as well as up, so only keep a box sealed because you want to own it.
Alternatives to a full box
If a full box is more than you need, booster packs, booster bundles and Elite Trainer Boxes are also available for Phantasmal Flames. There was also a Mega Charizard X ex Ultra-Premium Collection, released on the same day as the set, with two foil promo cards and 18 booster packs.
Phantasmal Flames and the Mega Evolution Era
Phantasmal Flames followed the Mega Evolution base set and came before Ascended Heroes, Perfect Order, Chaos Rising, Pitch Black and Delta Reign. If you are building an era collection, it is one of the key sets, and its Charizard cards will always be in demand. Compare every set we stock in our Pokemon sets guide.
How Phantasmal Flames Compares With Other Mega Evolution Sets
Every Mega Evolution set has its own personality. The base set introduced the mechanic with Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex, Perfect Order focused on Mega Zygarde ex, and Pitch Black brought darkness with Mega Darkrai ex. Phantasmal Flames stands out because of Charizard, the single most popular Pokemon in the card game. That popularity tends to keep demand for its packs and singles strong long after release, which is worth knowing whether you open your box or keep it sealed.
