Holo Pokemon Cards Explained: 8 Best Types for Great Binders

Few things in collecting feel as exciting as pulling a shiny card from a pack. Holo Pokemon cards have been part of the game since the very first set, and their sparkle is still one of the best parts of opening packs. But not all holos are the same. There are standard holos, reverse holos, full arts, special patterns and much more.

This guide explains the different types of holo Pokemon cards, how to tell them apart and which holos collectors love most.

What Are Holo Pokemon Cards?

A holo card has a holographic foil layer that shines and shifts in the light. In a classic holo card, the foil is in the artwork box, while the rest of the card is printed normally.

Holo versus reverse holo

  • Holo: the artwork is shiny, and the rest of the card is not
  • Reverse holo: the card is shiny everywhere except the artwork

Most modern packs include at least one reverse holo card, while standard holos and higher rarities are rarer pulls.

8 Best Types of Holo Pokemon Cards

1. Vintage holo rares

Holo rares from early Wizards of the Coast sets such as Base Set, Jungle and Fossil are classics. Base Set holos like Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur are some of the most famous cards ever printed.

2. Reverse holos

Reverse holos exist for many cards in modern sets, which makes them popular with master set collectors.

3. Cosmos holos

Cosmos holos have a pattern of circles and stars. They are often found on promo cards in blisters and collection boxes.

4. Full art cards

Full art cards have artwork covering the whole card with a textured holo finish. Our full art Pokemon cards guide explains the different types.

5. Rainbow rares

Rainbow rares from the Sun and Moon and Sword and Shield eras have a colourful rainbow foil.

6. Gold cards

Gold secret rares and Hyper Rares have a shiny gold finish. Our gold Pokemon cards guide covers them.

7. Special Illustration Rares

Modern Special Illustration Rares use detailed artwork with textured foil effects.

8. Shining and shiny cards

Shiny Pokemon cards show alternate colours, often with special holo effects. Shining Pokemon from the Neo era are vintage favourites.

How to Tell if a Card Is Holo

  1. Tilt the card under light. Holo foil shines and shifts colour.
  2. Check the artwork box. A shiny artwork box means a standard holo.
  3. Check the rest of the card. A shiny border and text area with plain artwork means reverse holo.
  4. Feel the surface. Full arts and special cards often have textured surfaces.

Are Holo Pokemon Cards Valuable?

Many are, but not all. Value depends on the card, rarity, condition and demand.

  • Vintage holos in great condition can be very valuable
  • Modern standard holos are usually affordable
  • Reverse holos are usually affordable, but some popular ones sell well
  • Full arts, gold cards and Special Illustration Rares are often the most valuable modern holos

Holo Patterns and Fakes

Genuine holo Pokemon cards have specific holo patterns for each era and rarity. Fake cards often have a generic rainbow shine across the whole card, or holo effects in the wrong place. Comparing holo patterns with a genuine card is one of the best ways to spot fakes. Our guide on how to tell if Pokemon cards are fake explains more.

Holo Pokemon Cards as Gifts

A shiny holo of a favourite Pokemon makes a great small gift. Put it in a toploader, add a card saying which set it comes from and you have a thoughtful present for any fan.

Holo Bleed and Print Lines

Some holo cards show small printing issues, such as faint lines across the foil or colours bleeding at the edges. These are common on some sets and can affect grades. When buying valuable holos, check the surface under good light.

Protecting Holo Pokemon Cards

Holo surfaces scratch more easily than regular cards, so protection is important.

  1. Sleeve holos straight from the pack.
  2. Avoid sliding cards across tables.
  3. Use toploaders for valuable holos.
  4. Keep cards away from heat and humidity, which can cause curling.

Our premium card sleeves and Ultra Pro 9 pocket pages are great for holo collections.

Why holo cards curl

Holo cards can curl slightly because the foil layer reacts differently to humidity than the card itself. Storing cards in a stable, dry place and pressing curled cards gently in a binder can help.

Holo Pokemon Cards Through the Eras

Holo styles have changed a lot over 30 years.

Wizards of the Coast era

Early holos used a starry foil pattern in the artwork box, with simple borders. These are the classic holo Pokemon cards many collectors grew up with.

EX to Black and White eras

Holo patterns changed with each era, and reverse holos became a standard part of packs. Full art cards appeared in the Black and White era.

Sun and Moon and Sword and Shield eras

Rainbow rares, gold secret rares and alternate arts brought new foil effects and textures.

Scarlet and Violet and Mega Evolution eras

Illustration Rares, Special Illustration Rares and Hyper Rares use detailed artwork with textured foil, making modern holo Pokemon cards some of the most beautiful ever printed.

Building a Holo Binder

A holo binder makes a stunning display. Arrange cards by set, type or colour, and use black binder pages to make the foil stand out. Many collectors build a binder with one holo of every Pokemon they love.

Opening Packs for Holos

Every modern booster pack includes at least one rare card and at least one reverse holo. Higher rarities, such as Illustration Rares and Special Illustration Rares, are much less common. Our Pokemon booster packs guide explains what each pack contains.
