VMAX Pokemon cards were the giants of the Sword and Shield era. Based on the Dynamax and Gigantamax forms from the Pokemon Sword and Shield video games, they had huge HP, powerful attacks and some of the most stunning artwork the card game has ever seen. Today, VMAX cards are popular collectables, with alternate arts that rank among the most valuable modern cards.
This guide explains what VMAX Pokemon cards are, how they work and nine of the best VMAX cards to look for.
What Are VMAX Pokemon Cards?
VMAX cards are special evolutions of Pokemon V. To play a VMAX, you place it on top of the matching Pokemon V. VMAX cards have very high HP, often over 300, and powerful Max attacks.
Prize cards
When a VMAX is Knocked Out, your opponent takes three Prize cards. That makes VMAX cards powerful but risky.
Dynamax and Gigantamax
Dynamax VMAX cards show a giant version of the Pokemon. Gigantamax VMAX cards show a special Gigantamax form, such as Gigantamax Pikachu or Gigantamax Charizard.
History of VMAX Pokemon Cards
VMAX cards were introduced in early 2020 with the Sword and Shield base set. They appeared throughout the Sword and Shield era alongside Pokemon V. In 2022, Brilliant Stars introduced VSTAR cards, which became another way to power up Pokemon V. VMAX cards have since rotated out of the Standard format, but they remain popular with collectors.

VMAX Pokemon Cards for Kids
Children often love VMAX Pokemon cards because of their giant artwork and huge HP numbers. A few affordable VMAX cards in a small binder make a fun gift for young fans.
How VMAX Cards Worked in Battle
VMAX cards dominated many decks in the Sword and Shield era. Their high HP made them hard to Knock Out, and their attacks could deal huge damage. Players balanced them with single-Prize Pokemon to manage the Prize trade. VMAX cards are no longer legal in Standard, but they can still be used in the Expanded format and in casual games.

Are VMAX Pokemon Cards Valuable?
Regular VMAX cards are usually affordable. Rainbow, gold and especially alternate art VMAX cards can be worth much more, with Moonbreon among the most valuable modern cards. Value depends on rarity, condition and demand. Our Pokemon card value guide explains how to check prices.
VMAX Versus VSTAR and Ex
VMAX cards give up three Prize cards, while VSTAR cards give up two and have a once-per-game VSTAR Power. In the current Scarlet and Violet and Mega Evolution eras, Pokemon ex fill the same role. Our ex Pokemon cards guide explains how they compare.

Building a VMAX Binder
VMAX Pokemon cards look fantastic in a binder, especially alternate arts that tell a story. Many collectors arrange their binder by set, with the regular VMAX, rainbow and alternate art versions side by side. Others group VMAX cards by type, creating colourful pages of Fire, Water and Psychic Pokemon. Leave space for cards you are still chasing, and keep a checklist so you know what is missing.
Buying VMAX singles
Because VMAX cards are no longer in new packs, buying singles is the easiest way to collect them. Compare recent sold prices, check condition carefully and buy from trusted sellers.
Protecting VMAX Cards
Full art and alternate art VMAX cards have textured surfaces that show scratches easily. Sleeve them straight from the pack and use toploaders for the most valuable ones. Our premium card sleeves are a great choice.
