Pokemon Sets

Every Mega Evolution, Scarlet & Violet and Sword & Shield set we stock — what is inside, what to chase and where to start.

Pokemon Sets Explained: A Collector’s Guide

Pokemon sets are the building blocks of the Pokemon Trading Card Game. Every few months a new expansion arrives with its own artwork, mechanics and chase cards, and each one belongs to a wider era of the game. This guide explains how Pokemon sets work, compares every set we stock, and helps you decide which box or pack to open next.

Use the set grid above to shop by expansion, or read on for a detailed breakdown of each era. If you already know what you want, our full Pokemon cards sale lists every product in stock.

What Is a Pokemon Set?

A set, also called an expansion, is a group of cards released together under one name. Each set has a symbol printed on every card, usually near the bottom, so you can tell which expansion a card comes from. Cards also carry a collector number such as 244/198, which shows the card’s position in the set.

When the first number is higher than the second, the card is a secret rare. These are printed beyond the main set count and include most Special Illustration Rares and gold Hyper Rares, which is why they are the most valuable cards in modern Pokemon sets.

Main sets and special sets

Most eras include main expansions sold in booster boxes, plus special sets that are only available in collections, Elite Trainer Boxes and bundles. Scarlet & Violet 151 and Shrouded Fable are both special sets, which is why their packs are so sought after.

Eras and series

Pokemon TCG sets are grouped into eras, sometimes called series. Each era shares a design style and a headline mechanic. The current era is Mega Evolution, which followed Scarlet & Violet, which in turn followed Sword & Shield.

Mega Evolution Pokemon Sets

The Mega Evolution era brings back one of the most loved mechanics in Pokemon history. Mega Evolution Pokemon ex are powerful cards with striking artwork, and this era is the newest on our shelves.

Chaos Rising

Chaos Rising is the newest Pokemon set we stock and the latest Mega Evolution expansion. We have sealed booster boxes and loose booster packs, and it is one of the most exciting sets to open right now.

Perfect Order

Perfect Order continues the Mega Evolution era with a main set of 88 cards plus secret rares. We stock booster boxes and singles, including Illustration Rares such as Espurr, Raticate and Drapion.

Phantasmal Flames

Phantasmal Flames has a main set of 94 cards. Its Special Illustration Rare Rotom ex is a favourite with collectors and one of our featured singles.

Mega Evolution base set

The first set of the era introduced the new Mega ex cards. We stock booster packs and singles such as the Shedinja Illustration Rare, plus matching Ultra Pro portfolios.

Scarlet & Violet Pokemon Sets

Scarlet & Violet launched in 2023 and became one of the strongest eras for collectors. It introduced Pokemon ex with Tera types and made Illustration Rares and Special Illustration Rares a regular part of every set.

Scarlet & Violet base set

The 2023 base set started the era with Koraidon ex and Miraidon ex. Its Miraidon ex Special Illustration Rare, numbered 244/198, is one of our featured singles.

Paldea Evolved and Obsidian Flames

Paldea Evolved expanded the Paldea region in mid 2023, and Obsidian Flames followed with a Tera Charizard ex as its headline card. We stock packs from both, plus Obsidian Flames singles such as the Geeta Special Illustration Rare.

151

Scarlet & Violet 151 celebrates the original 151 Pokemon from Kanto and is one of the most collected modern Pokemon sets. In English it was never sold in standard booster boxes, so loose packs are highly sought after.

Paradox Rift and Temporal Forces

Paradox Rift introduced Ancient and Future Pokemon such as Iron Jugulis, and Temporal Forces brought back ACE SPEC cards. We stock Temporal Forces booster boxes and packs, plus Paradox Rift singles.

Twilight Masquerade and Shrouded Fable

Twilight Masquerade focused on the Kitakami region, while Shrouded Fable was a special set built around Pecharunt ex. Our Shrouded Fable Elite Trainer Box is limited to one per customer.

Stellar Crown and Journey Together

Stellar Crown featured Terapagos ex, and Journey Together brought back Trainer’s Pokemon such as Iono’s Bellibolt ex. We stock booster boxes from both, including the Journey Together Enhanced box.

White Flare

White Flare is one of the final Scarlet & Violet releases, focused on Pokemon from the Unova region. We stock its booster packs.

Sword & Shield Pokemon Sets

Sword & Shield ran from 2020 to early 2023 and produced some of the most valuable modern cards. Sealed product from this era is now hard to find, so stock is limited.

Vivid Voltage

Vivid Voltage is famous for its rainbow Pikachu VMAX and Amazing Rare cards. We stock sealed Vivid Voltage booster boxes.

Astral Radiance and Silver Tempest

Astral Radiance featured Origin Forme Dialga and Palkia, while Silver Tempest is best known for its Lugia V alternate art. We stock booster packs from both sets.

How to Choose the Right Pokemon Set

With so many Pokemon sets available, picking one can feel overwhelming. These questions make the choice easier.

  • Which Pokemon do you love? Choose a set where your favourite Pokemon has a chase card.
  • Do you want to play? Newer sets contain cards that are legal in the current Standard format.
  • What is your budget? Single packs are cheap; full booster boxes give the complete opening experience.
  • Do you care about artwork? Sets with lots of Illustration Rares are great for binder collectors.
  • Do you want something rare? Older sets and special sets are harder to find and often more collectible.

If you are still undecided, start with a few packs from two or three sets and see which one you enjoy opening most.

New Pokemon Set Releases

A new Pokemon set arrives several times a year. Main expansions typically release about every three months, with special sets slotted in between. Each new Pokemon set usually follows the same pattern.

Pre-release events

Before launch, local game stores run pre-release tournaments where players build decks from Build & Battle kits. It is a fun, low-pressure way to try a new Pokemon set early.

Launch day

On release day, booster boxes, packs, Elite Trainer Boxes and blisters become available. Demand is highest in the first weeks, so popular products can sell out quickly.

After launch

Once more stock reaches Australia, availability improves and prices often settle. Singles from the new set start appearing as collectors open product.

How we handle a new Pokemon set

We list each new Pokemon set as soon as stock lands, starting with booster boxes and packs. Join our newsletter at the bottom of the page to hear about new releases and restocks first. For official announcements, follow the Pokemon TCG website.

Collecting a Master Set

A master set means owning every card in an expansion, including every reverse holo and secret rare. It is the ultimate challenge for dedicated collectors.

Start with the main set

Open packs to build the regular card list first. A booster box is a good starting point because it gives you plenty of commons, uncommons and rares.

Fill gaps with singles

Once you have most of the main set, buying the remaining cards as singles is far cheaper than opening more packs.

Save the chase cards for last

Special Illustration Rares and Hyper Rares are the most expensive cards in any set. Track their prices and buy when the time is right.

For full card lists of every expansion, the Bulbapedia expansion list is an excellent reference.

Booster Boxes, ETBs or Packs?

Each product type gives a different experience, and the best choice depends on the set.

  • Booster boxes usually contain 36 packs and give the best odds of pulling a set’s top cards.
  • Elite Trainer Boxes contain nine packs plus sleeves, Energy and accessories, which is ideal for new players.
  • Booster packs are perfect for trying several Pokemon sets without a big spend.
  • Blisters and collections add promo cards and are often the only way to open special sets.

Compare the price per pack before you buy. Divide the box price by the number of packs and check it against the loose pack price for the same set.

Playing With Pokemon TCG Sets

Each year, the Standard format rotates older Pokemon TCG sets out of competitive play. Cards from recent Scarlet & Violet and Mega Evolution sets are the most useful for tournament decks, while older cards remain fun for casual games.

If you want to see which cards are winning tournaments, decklists from major events are published on Limitless TCG. Buy the singles you need to copy a list instead of opening packs at random.

What Is Inside a Booster Pack?

Every modern English booster pack contains ten game cards plus a code card for Pokemon TCG Live. The ten cards are a mix of commons and uncommons, at least one reverse holo, and one rare or better. Some packs replace a regular slot with a much rarer card, which is where Illustration Rares, Special Illustration Rares and gold cards come from.

Because the rare slot varies, no two packs are the same. That surprise is what makes opening so much fun, and it is also why buying singles is the smart move when you need one particular card.

Reverse holos

Reverse holo cards have a shiny foil pattern across the card rather than on the artwork. Collectors who chase a master set need one of every reverse holo as well as every regular card.

Code cards

Code cards unlock digital boosters in Pokemon TCG Live, the official online game. They are a nice bonus for players and are often traded or given away by collectors who only keep the physical cards.

Spotting Genuine Sealed Product

Fake booster packs and boxes do exist, especially on marketplaces. Genuine sealed product has crisp printing, correct logos and tight factory shrink wrap with clean seams. Booster boxes from official supply also carry consistent branding on every side.

Be cautious of prices far below the going rate, blurry photos and sellers who will not show the actual item. Buying from a dedicated store that sources from official supply removes that worry completely.

Grading Cards From Modern Expansions

Grading companies such as PSA, Beckett and CGC assess a card’s corners, edges, surface and centring, then seal it in a protective slab with a score out of ten. A high grade can add significant value to chase cards.

If you plan to grade, sleeve your best pulls straight from the pack, store them in toploaders, and check centring under good light before you submit. Modern cards with perfect centring are the ones most likely to earn a top grade.

Opening Tips for the Best Experience

Opening packs is the highlight of the hobby, so make it count. Choose a clean, dry table, wash your hands first and have penny sleeves ready for any hits. Open slowly rather than ripping through a stack, and sleeve rare cards before you move on to the next pack.

Many collectors record their openings to share with friends online. Whatever you do, take a moment to enjoy each pull, because the excitement of a great hit is what keeps the hobby special.

English vs Japanese Releases

Japanese expansions usually release a few months before their English versions, and the two do not always match one to one. English sets often combine cards from more than one Japanese release, which is why card numbers and set names can differ between languages.

Everything in our store is an English release unless a product title says otherwise. English cards are the right choice for playing in Australian tournaments, and they are what most local collectors trade and sell.

Why Prices Vary Between Expansions

Two booster boxes can look similar on the shelf yet sell for very different prices. Print run size, the popularity of the chase cards, how long the product has been out of print and overall collector demand all play a part.

Popular characters such as Charizard, Pikachu and the Eeveelutions tend to lift a whole expansion. Sets with a deep list of Illustration Rares are also in demand, because collectors want more than one great card per box.

Supply matters too. When a product stops being printed, remaining stock becomes harder to find, and prices for sealed boxes often rise as a result.

Gift Ideas From Our Range

Shopping for a Pokemon fan? A few booster packs from different expansions is a simple, affordable gift. For a bigger present, an Elite Trainer Box includes packs, sleeves and accessories in a beautiful box, while a full booster box is the ultimate treat for a dedicated collector.

Add a binder or a pack of sleeves so the recipient can protect their new cards straight away.

Storing Your Pokemon Sets

Once you start collecting a set, good storage keeps it in top shape. A 9-pocket zippered binder holds a full set neatly, and set-themed Ultra Pro portfolios make collections easy to show off. Browse our TCG accessories for binders, sleeves and protectors.
