What You Need for a Pokemon Card Battle

  • A 60-card deck for each player
  • Damage counters or dice to track damage
  • A coin to decide who goes first
  • Markers for special conditions such as Poisoned and Burned
  • A playmat (optional) to keep the game tidy

A deck can include up to four copies of any card with the same name, except Basic Energy cards, which have no limit. The easiest way to start is with a ready-made deck. Our Pokemon TCG decks guide explains your options.

8 Easy Steps for a Pokemon Card Battle

Step 1: Shuffle and draw

Each player shuffles their deck and draws seven cards.

Step 2: Place your Active Pokemon

Choose a Basic Pokemon from your hand and place it face down as your Active Pokemon. You can also place up to five Basic Pokemon face down on your Bench. If you have no Basic Pokemon, show your hand, reshuffle and draw again. This is called a mulligan, and your opponent may draw an extra card.

Step 3: Set aside Prize cards

Each player takes the top six cards of their deck and places them face down as Prize cards.

Step 4: Flip a coin

Flip a coin to decide who goes first. Both players then turn their Pokemon face up and the Pokemon card battle begins.

Step 5: Draw a card

Each turn starts by drawing one card.

Step 6: Take actions

During your turn, you can do these in any order:

  • Put Basic Pokemon onto your Bench
  • Evolve your Pokemon
  • Attach one Energy card to one of your Pokemon
  • Play Item cards, one Supporter card and one Stadium card
  • Retreat your Active Pokemon once
  • Use Abilities

Step 7: Attack

When you are ready, attack with your Active Pokemon if it has enough Energy. Attacking ends your turn. The player who goes first cannot attack or play a Supporter on their very first turn.

Step 8: Take Prize cards

When you Knock Out an opponent’s Pokemon, take one Prize card. Pokemon ex give two Prize cards, and Mega Evolution Pokemon ex give three.

How to Win a Pokemon Card Battle

There are three ways to win:

  1. Take all six of your Prize cards.
  2. Knock Out your opponent’s last Pokemon in play, so they have no Pokemon left.
  3. Your opponent cannot draw a card at the start of their turn because their deck is empty.

Damage, Weakness and Resistance

When you attack, place damage counters on the defending Pokemon. If the total damage equals or exceeds its HP, it is Knocked Out.

  • Weakness usually doubles the damage a Pokemon takes from a certain type
  • Resistance reduces damage from a certain type, usually by 30

Using Weakness well is one of the easiest ways to win a Pokemon card battle.

Special Conditions

Some attacks give special conditions:

  • Asleep: the Pokemon cannot attack or retreat until it wakes up
  • Burned: the Pokemon may take damage between turns
  • Confused: attacks may fail
  • Paralysed: the Pokemon cannot attack or retreat for one turn
  • Poisoned: the Pokemon takes damage between turns

Retreating or evolving removes special conditions.

Easy Strategy Tips for Beginners

  1. Set up your Bench early. Having backup Pokemon stops you losing if your Active Pokemon is Knocked Out.
  2. Attach Energy every turn. Missing Energy attachments slows your attacks.
  3. Use draw Supporters. Trainer cards that draw cards help you find what you need.
  4. Plan your Prize trade. Think about how many Prize cards your Pokemon give up when Knocked Out.
  5. Watch your opponent’s Bench. It tells you what attacks are coming next.
  6. Do not over-commit Energy. Spread Energy so you have a backup attacker.

Learn from every game

Every Pokemon card battle teaches you something, whether you win or lose. Playing against different decks is the fastest way to improve. After each game, think about what worked and what you would change. Small improvements add up quickly.

Common Beginner Mistakes

New players often make the same few mistakes in a Pokemon card battle. Avoiding them will help you win more games straight away.

  1. Forgetting to attach Energy. Make it a habit at the start of every turn.
  2. Leaving the Bench empty. If your only Pokemon is Knocked Out, you lose immediately.
  3. Playing two Supporters. You can only play one Supporter card each turn.
  4. Attacking too early. Sometimes it is better to set up first, then attack.
  5. Ignoring Retreat Costs. Plan ahead so you can switch Pokemon when needed.
