Most Expensive Pokemon Card Ever Sold: 7 Great Stories

The most expensive Pokemon card ever sold is a PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator, which sold at auction in February 2026 for US$16,492,000 including the buyer’s premium. That sale did more than break a Pokemon record. According to Guinness World Records, it also became the most expensive trading card of any kind ever sold at auction.

In this guide we look at the story behind the most expensive Pokemon card, the other famous sales that collectors talk about, and the factors that push a card’s price into the stratosphere.

The Most Expensive Pokemon Card: Pikachu Illustrator

The Pikachu Illustrator was never sold in packs. It was awarded as a prize in a 1998 illustration contest in Japan, and only a few dozen copies are believed to exist. The artwork, which shows Pikachu holding a paintbrush, was drawn by Atsuko Nishida, the original designer of Pikachu.

The record-breaking copy is the only Pikachu Illustrator known to have received a PSA 10 grade, the highest grade PSA gives.

From Logan Paul to a new owner

  • In July 2021, YouTuber and wrestler Logan Paul bought the PSA 10 copy in a private sale worth US$5,275,000.
  • He wore the card in a custom diamond necklace at WrestleMania 38 in 2022.
  • In February 2026, the card sold through Goldin Auctions after 41 days of bidding for US$16,492,000.
  • The winning bidder was investor AJ Scaramucci.

You can read the official record on the Guinness World Records website.

Why Is the Pikachu Illustrator Worth So Much?

Three things make this card unique. First, its supply is tiny. Second, it is one of the earliest and most famous Pokemon cards ever made. Third, the PSA 10 copy is the only perfect example, so there is literally nothing else like it. When rarity, history and condition all peak at once, prices follow.

Other Famous High-Value Pokemon Card Sales

The most expensive Pokemon card is in a league of its own, but other cards have sold for life-changing sums too.

1st Edition Base Set Charizard

The 1999 1st Edition Base Set Charizard is the card most people picture when they think of valuable Pokemon cards. High-grade copies have sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars, and it remains the most recognisable chase card in the hobby.

1st Edition Neo Revelation Entei

Vintage cards outside the Charizard family can also climb. A PSA 10 1st Edition Neo Revelation Entei was reported to have sold for US$312,000 in September 2026.

Tournament trophy cards

Trophy cards awarded to winners of early official tournaments, such as the No.1 Trainer cards, were made in tiny numbers. They rarely come up for sale, and when they do they attract enormous interest.

What Makes Any Pokemon Card Valuable?

You do not need a million-dollar card to understand value. The same factors apply at every level:

  1. Rarity: how many copies exist, and how hard they are to pull
  2. Condition: centring, corners, edges and surface
  3. Grade: a PSA 10 can be worth many times more than an ungraded copy
  4. Demand: popular Pokemon like Pikachu, Charizard and Umbreon sell faster
  5. History: early prints, 1st Edition cards and famous promos carry a premium
  6. Artwork: modern Special Illustration Rares are prized for their art

Could a Modern Card Become the Next Record?

Modern cards are printed in far larger numbers than 1990s cards, which makes a record-breaking price much harder. That said, the most expensive Pokemon card from each new set can still be worth a lot. Special Illustration Rares and gold Mega Hyper Rares are the cards to watch, especially in perfect condition.

If you want to chase high-value modern cards, the smart move is often to buy the exact single you want rather than opening packs. Our Pokemon singles include Special Illustration Rares and Hyper Rares in Near Mint condition.

A Short Timeline of Record Pokemon Card Sales

The record for the most expensive Pokemon card has been broken several times, and almost always by the same card.

  1. 2021: Logan Paul buys the PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator privately for US$5,275,000, a Guinness record for a private sale at the time.
  2. 2022: the card becomes a pop culture moment when Paul wears it to WrestleMania 38.
  3. 2026: the same card sells at auction for US$16,492,000, setting the record for any trading card sold at auction.

What this timeline shows is that the very top of the market is driven by a tiny number of iconic cards. The rest of the hobby moves at a very different pace, and most cards are valued in dollars rather than millions.

Modern cards collectors watch

Today’s sets also have cards that sell for strong prices. Collectors watch Special Illustration Rares of popular Pokemon, gold Mega Hyper Rares and full-art Supporters. Cards like Iono’s Bellibolt ex Hyper Rare and Miraidon ex Special Illustration Rare show how modern rarity tiers have created a new generation of chase cards.

How to Protect a Valuable Pokemon Card

Even if your best card is worth a few dollars rather than a few million, the same care applies:

  • Sleeve it immediately after opening
  • Store it in a toploader or magnetic holder
  • Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from damp
  • Consider grading if the card is valuable and in excellent condition

Our premium card sleeves and team bags are an easy way to protect your best pulls.
